TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd. (Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan) announced to TSUNEISHI GROUP (ZHOUSHAN) SHIPBUILDING INC. (TZS), as a TSUNEISHI’s factory in China, that it has successfully completed the first block loading for its first Methanol-Fuelled 5,900TEU Type Container Carrier on 16 April, 2025.

The 5,900 TEU type container carrier is the largest container carrier built by TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Group. This vessel has a maximum capacity of 5,915 20-foot-equivalent-unit containers in the hold and on deck, and up to 1,400 reefer containers can also be loaded in response to increased demand in recent years. In addition to the enhanced hull form and MT-FAST*1, our innovative energy-saving technology, the integration of a large-capacity shaft generator has enabled this dual-fuel vessel to achieve both optimal loading performance and exceptional fuel economy when compared with fuel oil vessels in the same segment.

This vessel has been developed based on the concept of a final solution for the zero CO₂ emission vessel through the use of green methanol*2. Therefore, not only the main engine but also all on-board generators, HiMSEN engine (8H32DF-LM) which will be supplied by HD Hyundai, can be methanol-fuelled. This makes it possible to achieve carbon neutrality with the exception of a small amount of pilot fuel. Furthermore, the vessel is equipped with the necessary infrastructure to receive large-capacity alternative maritime power supplies. In addition, the generators can be deactivated during anchorage, thereby achieving zero CO₂ emissions. We will continue to promote the further practical application of methanol-fuelled vessels with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality in the future.

*1：MT-FAST is an energy-saving device that improves propulsion efficiency by approximately 4% by regulating water flow through the installation of multiple fins in front of the propeller. It was developed jointly with MTI Co., Ltd., of the NYK Group.

*2：Green methanol refers to methanol synthesized from recovered CO₂ (carbon dioxide) and hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources, or bio-methanol produced from biomass, and which are considered carbon neutral.

In December 2020, TSUNEISHI GROUP (ZHOUSHAN) SHIPBUILDING, Inc. (Address: Retiao Village, Xiushan Island, Daishan County, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, China; President: Jiro Sato; hereinafter referred to as TZS) has secured the orders for three 1,091TEU Type Container Carriers from Taicang Container Lines Co., LTD, the subsidiary of the State-owned Jiangsu Port Group.

Prior to the above-mentioned, TZS has also delivered successfully four 1,020TEU Type Container Carriers, the previous model, to Shanghai Haihua Shipping Co. LTD, the subsidiary of another State-owned Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., LTD. The ships were highly evaluated for their navigational performance in actual sea conditions.

The new TSUNEISHI’s 1,091TEU Type Container Carrier is the optimum design for the intra-Japan/China trade. By incorporating the unique technologies such as the hull form that reduces resistance, and the energy-saving MT-FAST device, the ship’s fuel efficiency has been greatly improved compared to the 1,020TEU Type Container Carrier. It has also met the EEDI Phase 3 requirements. Along with the optimized ballast water treatment system, the ship is equipped with double fuel tanks in case of marine accidents, and measures have been taken to prevent oil spills and other marine pollution. In addition, the arrangement of cargo holds and outfitting has been devised to maximize the container loading by 71TEU (20FT equivalent) compared to the 1,020TEU Type Container Carrier. This makes it the largest class of Container Carrier with a gross tonnage of less than 10,000.

TZS has received orders for a cumulative roundup 40 Container Carriers (including the 2,800TEU Type) since 2013, which has made TZS wealth of experience and advanced technological capabilities in the construction of not only bulk carriers but also container carriers.

TZS will continue to make efforts to provide customers with excellent ships that are both economical and environmentally friendly.

■About 1,091 TEU Type Container Carrier
Length × Breadth × Depth: 146m × 23.25m × 11.5m
Maximum loading capacity: 1,091TEU
